Orange Launches Carrier Billing for Marketplace Apps

Posted by Steven McPherson in "Windows Phone News" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.smartgorillas.com/?p=3073

I don't know about you, but I'm all for a single bill for all of my purchases. I hate having to fiddle around with multiple bills and figure how much I paid from which account to where for what purchase. Not fun! The inconvenience and financial nightmare this creates isn't even the worst part. Storing your credit info in a website is a process that doesn't come without risk and to that end, Orange is launching a new service. Starting this week Orange will enable customers to pay for their Windows Phone 7 marketplace purchases with their mobile account. This move will effectively bring Orange in line with carriers like AT&T and Telstra who offer this ability to their customers already. This new service will be available to Orange customers on February 23, 2011.

This new service will enable customers to have a single bill for all of their mobile needs and wont' require the storing of credit or debit cards within the marketplace itself.

Xavier Perret, VP of Strategic Partnership at Orange stated this week that "It is a new step forward in our partnership with Microsoft on Windows Phone 7. It will allow our customers to enjoy the real benefits of their content purchases from the Windows Phone Marketplace by offering them a simpler and more secure payment method."

Orange will also be launching a new category of applications entitled "Orange Selection". This category Orange will offer applications that the carrier has developed, as well as, highlight applications from other developers.

UK Carriers Support Windows Phone 7 Release

Posted by Adan Galvan in "Windows Phone News" @ 01:00 PM

Alex Reeve, Director, Mobile Business Group, Microsoft UK, said: “Following our announcement at Mobile World Congress that Orange will be our lead partner, it is wonderful now to have all of the UK’s network operators supporting the launch of Windows Phone 7. This means we can provide network choice and also a range of phones across networks for customers to choose from, all with the power of Windows Phone 7. We are thrilled to be working in partnership with these major industry players.”

The news regarding Windows Phone 7 is starting to come at an increasing pace. Recently, news of the semi-official release date for Windows Phone 7 in Europe and the US have come to light. We've also heard that Microsoft will not be supporting CDMA carriers such as Verizon and Sprint in the US. However, in the UK all major carriers (Orange, O2, Vodafone, T-Mobile and Three) will be offering Windows Phone 7 devices when it launches. This is great news for UK consumers. As a US consumer, I can only hope that Microsoft will be able to bring CDMA support as soon as posssible. It will take support from carriers around the world to help Microsoft gain ground on their rivals.

HTC Gets WP7 Orders from AT&T, Orange

Posted by Jon Westfall in "HTC Windows Phones" @ 04:30 AM

"Taipei, Aug. 10, 2010 (CENS)--High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC), a world-caliber supplier of smartphones, has reportedly received orders from AT&T and Orange for its newly debuted Windows Phone 7 phone, which will be launched in the U.S. and some European countries in the fourth quarter of this year, in an effort to cash in on year-end sales booms, according to industry sources. In fact, Microsoft`s chief operating officer Kevin Turner has confirmed that the world`s first WP7 phone will be available in the U.S. and Europe in October or November, implying that among WP7-powered hardware developers as HTC, Asus, Samsung, LG and Dell, who have been engaged in development of such phones, some have been set to ship out their models."

I'm a bit concerned that we've heard too much about AT&T carrying WP7 and not enough about T-Mobile, Verizon, or Sprint carrying it. Could this mean they don't actually have plans to carry WP7 at launch, or do they simply have an easier time keeping their leaks in check? Is WP7 doomed if only 1 major carrier per country carries it?

HTC Touch HD Exclusive to Orange UK

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 08:05 AM

http://pressoffice.orange.co.uk/Con...63&NewsAreaID=2

"Orange today announced that the HTC Touch HD handset will be available in the UK from early November, exclusively on the Orange network. The Touch HD is a premium multimedia enhanced mobile handset, designed with a focus on entertainment that is set transform how people experience multimedia on the move. Its extensive 3.8 inch, high resolution, widescreen WVGA touchscreen offers users stunning clarity and vibrant colours, providing an unrivalled experience when watching movies or using Orange’s mobile TV service, browsing the internet on Orange’s high speed data network (3G+) or even scanning through photos taken with its 5 megapixel auto focus camera. The Touch HD also renders websites quickly and in full-page width, providing a browsing experience closer to that using fixed line broadband and allowing users to navigate more easily. What’s more, the stylish new device features HTC’s beautiful TouchFLO 3D user interface to provide quick and intuitive access to the people, messages and content that are most important, and a standard 3.5mm headphone jack has been incorporated, allowing customers to use high-performance headphones with the device for the best possible sound quality."

Exclusivity sucks, but at least it's better than nothing. To our UK readers, if you're in the market for a new device and like what you see in the Touch HD, then starting early November, you'll be able to pick it up with Orange from £79.99 (~ $126 USD) on a £40 (~ $63 USD) per month plan for 18 months. The plan includes a monthly quota of 250MB, which should be enough for light e-mail access and the odd browse.
