Mango Countdown Begins

Posted by Nurhisham Hussein in "Windows Phone Software" @ 06:30 PM

http://www.electronista.com/article...arrowed.timing/

"Microsoft has narrowed down the date when it starts rolling out Windows Phone 7's Mango update, contacts slipped on Thursday. Both an upgrade for existing owners as well as new phones are poised to be available as soon as September 1."

That's quite a bit sooner than I expected - and it's really to Microsoft's credit that they're moving with such urgency. not long to go now people - September 1 is barely two weeks away (and change). Woot!

Behind The Scenes: Navigation In Mango

Posted by Nurhisham Hussein in "Windows Phone Software" @ 11:00 PM

http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_...g-in-mango.aspx

"Today I want to provide an insider look at some of the navigation improvements in our next release-including ones related to multitasking. As program manager for these features in Mango, it was my team's job to help you move more easily around the phone, preferably without thinking much about how you got there."

There's nothing new here to add to our knowledge of Mango, but this blog post does flesh out some of the details and the thinking that went into the changes. Comments? Agree/Disagree/I'm moving to Android?

Previewing Mango

Posted by Nurhisham Hussein in "Windows Phone Software" @ 10:00 PM

"To say "Mango" for Windows Phone 7 is a large update is a bit of an understatement. It's massive. Although we have had two updates to our fledgling OS, both have been relatively minor. "Mango", however, is Microsoft's attempt to fill in all the gaps left from the v1.0 release last fall. Can it succeed?"

WPCentral has been playing with a preview version of Mango, and really like what they see. The scale of the improvements justifies Microsoft's labeling of Mango as WP7.5, and you'll see why after reading through the article.

The Mango Update Detailed

Posted by Nurhisham Hussein in "Windows Phone News" @ 10:00 PM

http://www.ben.geek.nz/2011/04/wind...ling-the-mango/

"The position I take on Mango is this: everyone knows there are features missing from the current version of WP7. Features like multitasking, camera streams, sockets, and more. It would be crazy for Microsoft to not add these high-demand features to WP7 as quickly as possible. This morning we can see that they are certainly adding these features, they've thought them through very carefully, and they are further along with implementation than many people predicted."

It's still a ways off, but some details of the forthcoming major update for Windows Phone 7, codenamed "Mango", were released during the MIX conference. While the slant of the released details is towards developers, I'm sure end users would be just as interested - multitaskiong, custom ringtones, multiple live tiles per app, and of course IE9. All good stuff, and hopefully with a more trouble free update process than NoDo has proved to be.

Windows Phone 7 Multitasking, IE9 and Skydrive Future Features Shown

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone News" @ 03:30 PM

"Giving a closer look at some of the new Windows Phone 7 features that are coming this spring, VP for Windows Phone Program Management Joe Belfiore demonstrated the operating system's upcoming ability to multitask, integrate with SkyDrive, and display web pages using IE 9. Though full details were scarce, we got a good taste of what we can expect when Microsoft rolls out its update in the March or April time frame."

These videos are all unfortunately pretty bad in terms of quality, but these videos are showing three of the key features that will be coming to Windows Phone 7 later in 2011: multitasking (though in reality it's not "true" multitasking), IE9, and Skydrive support for the Office hub.

WP7 Updates: IE9, Twitter, Multitasking in 2011

Posted by Nurhisham Hussein in "Windows Phone Software" @ 10:00 PM

The scuttlebutt had it right - among the updates Microsoft has planned for WP7 are a mobile version of IE9, a Twitter hub and (finally) multitasking. While there's no timeline for delivery of these updates, the expectations are that these will be delivered this year. More immediately, the first WP7 update (codenamed NoDo) has been confirmed for the first couple of weeks of March bringing with it copy and paste support, CDMA support and performance enhancements.

Copy-Paste Coming To WP7 In January?

Posted by Nurhisham Hussein in "Windows Phone News" @ 05:00 PM

http://wpcentral.com/wp7-copy-paste...eeks-early-2011

It looks like it won't be long before some of the bigger knocks against WP7 will be no more. WPCentral reports that Microsoft is preparing an update that will include not just copy/paste, but a slew of other improvements as well, including multi-tasking, turn-by-turn directions, and Skydrive/OWA support. That's quite a bit of work done since WP7 went gold, so I'm filing this under "I'll believe it when I see it", while I keep my fingers crossed. But the speed at which this update is apparently coming out, and the more direct mechanism with which Microsoft is delivering updates, makes a compelling case that things have changed for the better from the Windows Mobile days.

The Windows Phone 7 Multitasking Story

Posted by Pete Paxton in "Windows Phone Software" @ 05:00 AM

http://blog.markarteaga.com/CanWind...7Multitask.aspx

"What's my take on this? Well, Windows Phone 7 is based on Windows Embedded CE. Without going into too much details on Windows CE, it is basically a real-time operating system and is not a trimmed down version of their desktop Windows OS. Windows CE is it's own full fledged real-time operating system and yes it can do multitasking. In all the years I've been developing Windows Phone and Windows CE software for customers, I have seen lots of applications that just go out and kill the battery, launch X number of threads or do things that are just not too smart and really kills the end user experience on the device. Think about it, when an app kills the battery in 1hr, the end user will usually say "this phone sucks" and returns it. In reality it's not the phones fault, it's the crappy app! This has always been a problem that has plagued Pocket PC/Windows Mobile/Windows Phone 5.x - 6.x for some time. Windows Phone 7 is about the end user and making sure their experience with the phone is top notch. This post on Windows Phone 7 and "Focus" by Charlie Kindel talks a bit more about the end user experience."

If you're wondering where Windows Phone 7 stands on multitasking, especially in the wake of Apple's iPhone 4.0 OS, check out this blog post by Mark Arteaga!
