WP7 Impresses With HTML5 Performance On IE9

Posted by Brad Wasson in "Windows Phone Talk" @ 06:30 PM

"When it comes to running HTML5 content on a mobile browser, it looks as though Microsoft is setting the pace with its Internet Explorer 9 and Windows Phone 7 combination. The key factor? Hardware acceleration in the browser. A demonstration given during MIX11 in Las Vegas today pitted an iPhone 4 and Nexus S against a HTC Windows Phone 7 device. iOS vs. Android vs. Windows. The test was called HTML5 Speed Reading and performed a render test. The clear winner was the Windows Phone running IE9 due to the fact it takes advantage of hardware acceleration."

The test was run during Microsoft's recent MIX11 event in Las Vegas. While these sorts of tests are always open to criticism by one camp or another, we can safely conclude that hardware acceleration will be prevalent in the year's ahead. It does seem to have a very positive impact on render speed. It will be interesting to see how all the platforms increase performance using this technique and other approaches in the next year or two.

Get Ready to Skype From Your Windows Phone This Year

Posted by Nelson Ocampo in "Windows Phone Software" @ 11:00 PM

http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/13/...-windows-phone/

"You heard right -- Skype just went from 'nowhere near' Windows Phone 7, to 'on the roadmap,' to 'definitely coming this fall.'"

Microsoft's Joe Belifore confirmed at the Mix11 conference that Skype is coming to Windows Phone 7 in a few months. It wasn't too long ago that Skype seemed disinterested in developing an app for Windows Phone. But I guess a lot could change in a few months. Especially knowing that Microsoft is opening up key access to ports that Skype would likely be using.

Belifore mentioned that Microsoft has been working closely with Skype, and had a lot of praise to give them. That gives an indication that there is likely more involved than Skype simply deciding to create an app on their own.

It's clear that people at Microsoft do see what customers are asking for, and that they are actively pursuing ways to turn those wants into reality.

Microsoft Rumored To Announce Flexible Hardware Specs At MIX11

Posted by Richard Chao in "Windows Phone News" @ 11:00 PM

http://www.winrumors.com/microsoft-...indows-phone-7/

"According to sources familiar with the company's plans, the new hardware specifications will allow device manufacturers such as Nokia to create cheaper Windows Phone devices. The announcement may be made as early as the company's MIX11 conference this week."

Microsoft is rumored to announce flexible hardware specs for their Windows Phone OS at MIX11. Previously, makers of WP7 handsets had to adhere to a strict chassis requirement which meant all phones had virtually identical hardware with only the frame as the differentiator. With Microsoft's recent alliance with Nokia, it was expected a cheaper version of the Windows Phone OS would be needed as Nokia transitions away from Symbian. Hopefully, this potential cheaper version of Windows Phone will look closer to Windows Phone 7 and not the Kin OS.

Microsoft Hopes To Woo Developers At MIX11

Posted by Richard Chao in "Windows Phone News" @ 10:15 PM

"At Mix 2011, a Web and Windows Phone app development conference in Las Vegas, Microsoft plans to hold workshops on building apps for Windows Phone 7. Boot-camp sessions begin Monday, and Joe Belfiore, corporate vice president with Microsoft's mobile business, is expected to give a keynote speech on Wednesday."

MIX11 is set to begin tomorrow and Microsoft is expected to make a major push to get potential developers to begin publishing apps for their Windows Phone 7 platform.

In their statement last month, Microsoft stated 1.5 million copies of developer tools were downloaded and 36,000 people paid to become an official developer. This has resulted in over 11,500 apps with more being added everyday. While this is a good start, Microsoft would definitely like to see more developers producing apps.

Microsoft Releases Numbers Showing Strong Developer Support For WP OS

Posted by Richard Chao in "Windows Phone News" @ 10:50 PM

http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_...hat-matter.aspx

"Instead of talking about those points one-by-one, we thought it would be more fun to take a look at some of the numbers that illustrate our commitment to those principles over the course of our first year."

Microsoft has just posted in their blog some numbers related to the developer base for their Windows Phone OS.

1.5 million copies of the Windows Phone Developer Tools has been downloaded and 36,000 people have paid to become a member of the developer community with 1,200 new registers per week. Also reported is there are now 11,500 WP7 apps in the Zune marketplace. This number may seem lower than reported by the blogosphere because Microsoft does not count "lite" version of paid apps, wallpapers, duplicate versions of an app in different languages or "tonnage" created by competitor's apps running on the platform.

A couple other interesting numbers is that on average, users are downloading 12 apps per month and app certification takes only 1.8 days. More developer information and what can be expected for the future of Windows Phone OS will be coming at MIX11.
