Fix For Lumia 900 On The Way

Posted by Nurhisham Hussein in "Nokia Windows Phones" @ 11:00 PM

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news...data-glitch.ars

"Some Nokia Lumia 900 customers have been experiencing a loss of data connectivity-both LTE and 3G-on their new handsets. Nokia has identified the problem and devised a software fix, which will be rolled out on or around April 16th. Customers not wanting to wait can have their phones swapped for updated versions in AT&T stores. The company will also give any AT&T customer buying a Lumia between now and April 21 a $100 credit on their next bill."

At the price AT&T are retailing the Lumia for (with contract), that $100 credit means you're effectively getting the Lumia for free. If you aren't afraid of hooking up with AT&T, that's a pretty good deal for what looks like one of the better Windows Phone 7 devices out there. And kudos to Nokia for the fast turnaround.

Laptopmag.com have a quick hands-on with the forthcoming US version of the Nokia Lumia 900, which will debut on AT&T's LTE network soon. The hardware's what you would expect from a Windows Phone 7 except for a nice, big 4.3" screen and 8MP camera with Carl Zeiss lens. Interested? I am.

HTC Announces HTC TITAN II - HTC's First 4G LTE Windows Phone

Posted by Brad Wasson in "Windows Phone Talk" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.htc.com

"Packed with advanced imaging technology, the HTC TITAN II features a 16-megapixel camera with a wide-angle lens, autofocus, dual LED flash, red eye reduction, image stabilization, a backside-illuminated sensor and a physical camera button, offering a viable replacement for digital point-and-shoot cameras. The HTC TITAN II delivers a number of features that HTC has developed to help consumers capture photos in a variety of conditions; for instance, panoramic shot for sweeping landscapes and burst shot for action photography. The smartphone also enables 720p HD video recording with the rear-facing camera, as well as on-the-go video chat over Wi-Fi with its 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera.

Today, at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) being held in Las Vegas, Nevada, HTC introduced the HTC TITAN II as the company’s first Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) device to run on a 4G LTE network. Packed with an impressive feature list, including a 4.7-inch LCD display, a 16-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera (for video chat), this phone provides the largest display among Windows Phones, an advanced digital camera and access to 4G LTE speeds. If you are in the market for a new smartphone, be sure to check this out and perhaps buy yourself a "little" present. Read on for the full press release.

Verizon Expands LTE Wireless Network

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 11:16 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/160...l#lsrc.rss_main

"Verizon Wireless announced 19 more cities that will get its faster LTE wireless network service starting Thursday, bringing the total to 74 metropolitan areas."

19 new locations across the country, including Sacramento, CA, Hartford, Conn, Boise, ID and many more. You can get the full list here in case you are wondering if your city made the cut. This just adds fuel to the competitive fires so to speak as AT&T is going to launch their own LTE 4G network this summer in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas Houston and San Antonio, while Sprint is rumored to be in the planning process to add LTE to it's 4G network. This can't come soon enough for me, with data speeds up to 10 Mbps it certainly will leave 3G in the dust.

AT&T to Offer 20Mbps Wireless Data By 2009

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Smartphone Talk" @ 08:00 PM

http://www.mobileburn.com/news.jsp?Id=4628

"AT&T's Chief of Mobility, Ralph de la Vega, was recently quoted as saying that his company intends to offer data speeds of up to 20Mbps on its network by 2009. AT&T has previously committed to using the yet-to-be-standardized LTE technology for its next-generation 4G network. AT&T is currently testing an HSPA upgrade that will offer speeds up to 7.2Mbps, and already offers PC Cards that will support it. AT&T is in a unique position because these speed enhancements are merely software upgrades to existing equipment, and would require limited resources to deploy, as opposed to implementing an entirely new network."

Jumping from 7.2Mbps to 20Mbps is a significant bandwidth increase. In theory by the year 2009 my HSDPA enabled phone would be able to download whatever I wanted quicker than my current cable connection from Comcast. Hopefully with the increased data speeds AT&T will finally get around to releasing some video conferencing enabled devices, preferably of the Windows Mobile variety.
