Krashlander Shows Success of Free Apps

Posted by Danny Simmons in "Windows Phone Software" @ 05:30 PM

http://mobilitydigest.com/krashland...ssions-in-days/

"It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of Krashlander for Windows Phones and since the free/ad supported version has been released it's shot up to 14th in all games and 29th for all apps even though it was only released on February 23. It's already exceeded 1,000,000 ad impressions though. Beyond that, it's showing the power of free."

Many developers are reaping the benefits of ad-supported free applications. The ads are non-obtrusive to the user, and proving to be profitable for developers. I call that a win-win. Now that Microsoft has upped the number of free applications per developer, will we see more developers succeeding with this formula? Oh yeah, also check out Krashlander if you get a chance...

http://www.esphoneblog.com/2010/07/...h-register-now/

"Join us on July 20 2010 at 8.00 am PDT (What time is this in my region?) for an three-hour Office Live Meeting broadcast. Windows Phone 7 promises to be an amazing mobile phone operating system given its innovative user interface and functionality, as well as its great development platform upon which you can quickly and easily build games and applications. This course is organized into four virtual instructor-led sessions that are of 3-hour duration. They will be presented by forthcoming MS Press authors and MVP's, Andy Wigley and Rob Miles. It will provide developers a jump start for developing Windows Phone 7 applications. Labs will be completed offline with office hour access to the instructors."

Developers may want to check out these Windows Phone 7 Jump start live meetings being held in just under a week. Looks like a good opportunity to get a jump start, meaning if you've been putting off learning about WP7, now's a great time to catch up!

Facebook Mobile Site With No Data Charges

Posted by Ed Hansberry in "Windows Phone News" @ 04:00 AM

http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-20...g=2547-1_3-0-20

Facebook has launched a new site that for people in 45 countries using one of 50 carriers will not rack up any data charges. It is can be accessed at 0.facebook.com. It is a low bandwidth site, like the current m.facebook.com, but apparently the carriers will let Facebook site that begins with a "0" bypass the data counters. Presumably Facebook will pay the charges, or has worked out some sort of revenue sharing agreement based on advertising revenue.

I haven't seen a list of countries or carriers yet, but according to CNet, Brazil, Denmark, Greece, Hong Kong, India, and Turkey are included. France and the UK are on the roadmap. I guess for now, you'll need to check with your carrier to see if you qualify, unless someone here has found a complete list.

Solve limits, derivatives and integrals with MobileCAS®, the only computer algebra system with typesetting ever developed for Windows Mobile."

Last month, we reported on Pomegranate Software's generous decision to make SpaceTime 3.0 for Windows Mobile Standard a free download. Now they've gone a step further by doing the same with SpaceTime 4.0 for Windows Mobile Classic/Professional. This version is the latest available for Windows Mobile, though it will also be the last as it is now discontinued. Still, that doesn't make this any less of a great mathematics app, so head over to the SpaceTime web site and get downloading.

I'm giving away three pairs of SHURE SE210 Earphones (MSRP $179.99 USD), courtesy of the generous folks at Shure. Our very own David Tucker reviewed this earphones back in September, and he loved them - so I'm sure the three winners will as well. An iPod? An iPhone? A netbook or laptop? That's it - one post per person, and the contest closes on Tuesday the 15th of December at 12pm GMT -7. This contest is world-wide; I'll be shipping you the prizes myself.

Winners will be contacted via private forum message, so ensure that you have email notifications turned on. Winners will have 72 hours to claim their prize.

Let's see those entries!

Free Screen Capture From Ilium Software

Posted by Ed Hansberry in "Pocket PC Software" @ 02:00 AM

http://blog.iliumsoft.com/2009/07/0...date-available/

Ilium Software has just released an update to their Screen Capture utility for Windows Mobile devices. I haven't downloaded it yet but I think this saves files in PNG format, which is quite a bit smaller than the old BMP format the previous version used. It is available for WinMo 5 and 6.x devices, both Professional and Standard. If you are still using WinMo 2003SE or earlier, you'll need to continue using the older version.

Just like the previous version, this one is free.

New FindMe Location Sharing Service Keeps Friends Connected using Smartphones and Facebook

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Smartphone Software" @ 01:37 PM

http://electricpocket.com/aboutus/p...s/pr080318.html

"Electric Pocket, developer of mobile media and media applications for Smartphones, today introduces FindMe for Windows Mobile and BlackBerry devices. FindMe enables users, their friends, family and colleagues to share their current locations automatically and securely through their BlackBerry or Windows Mobile Smartphones without needing GPS. FindMe offers the opportunity to “tag” commonly visited locations, such as home, office, soccer field or favorite bars and restaurants, and post those locations on their Facebook profiles."

This is probably one of the coolest applications I have seen come out in a while. There really isn't much to say on it as the program itself is pretty basic. In a nutshell, what you do is install a tiny application on your Windows Mobile device. This application grabs information about the cell tower that you are connected to and allows you to assign a tag to that location. Then the application uploads your current location to Facebook which in turn allows all of your friends to see where you are. The only downside of this application that I can see is it will make a bit harder to hide from those individuals that you do not want to hang out with.

If you're a Facebook user then I recommend giving FindMe a download to play around with this simple, yet fun, program.
