WP7 Update Limbo: Is Your Carrier Blocking the Update?

Posted by Richard Chao in "Windows Phone Software" @ 02:30 PM

"Some Mobile Operators have the right to skip one update if they wish. However, they can't skip the next one, which would be an acumulative update and would include the previous one. So if your mobile operator decided to block this one, you will be getting the early March one (which will include the Feb one too)." - Diego T. (Microsoft WP7 Support)

Still haven't gotten the notification for your first WP7 update? There is a possibility your carrier may have exercised their right to block this update. That's right, carriers have the right to block updates for one cycle. This means if they did in fact block this first update, they will have to give you the next one. This also means if they give you this one, they can hold NoDo until the update after that. Updates are cumulative so when the next one comes it will include any previous updates. So the upside is you will get an update. The downside is your carrier definitely has a say in the schedule.

Will Windows Phone 7 Have Tethering at No Extra Charge? Maybe, Maybe Not...

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone Talk" @ 10:38 AM

It's your classic "Tweet & Delete": a fellow named Richard Dudley tweeted that all Windows Phone 7 devices would have tethering - as in, connect to your laptop and get Internet access via your phone - at no extra charge. Then he said his statement was a mix-up, and deleted all the evidence of his statements. I'd rather see retractions/corrections on Twitter rather than deletions, but the way Twitter is constructed right now, you can't attach a correction to a previously made Tweet.

At any rate, the issue of tethering is an interesting one. I've always liked the fact that I could tether my phone to my laptop or netbook when I needed a connection, but with WiFi available in so many places, I probably only use it half a dozen times a year at most. What about you? How important is tethering to you on your phone, and how often do you use it?

Australia's Telstra Shows Off their Customized Hub for Windows Phone 7

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone Mobile Operators" @ 09:18 AM

http://exchange.telstra.com.au/2010...-first-glimpse/

"A couple of weeks back thousands of software developers converged on the Gold Coast for Microsoft's annual technical education conference, Tech.Ed 2010. It was a chance for technology people to get their first look at Windows Phone 7 - Microsoft's new operating system for mobile phones. We also took the opportunity to preview our TelstraOne hub which will appear on Telstra's range of Windows Phone 7 smartphones later this year. The app, which is in the final stages of development, will provide our customers with fast, simple and graphic-rich access to unmetered news, weather and sport content."

If you've been curious how carriers will customize Windows Phone 7, wonder no more - they'll be getting their own hub. Personally, I think this is brilliant: from the looks of it, everything the carrier wants to add is integrated into a single hub, not splattered all over the device like we've seen with previous versions of Windows Phone. Although carrier customizations are rarely at the top of anyone's "must have" list, I understand the carrier's need to get their brand and services on the phone - if they're all inside one tile, that's just fine by me!

Vodafone and 3 Set to Merge In Australia

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC News" @ 07:42 PM

http://www.australianit.news.com.au...5-15306,00.html

"Tough economic times have triggered an upheaval in Australia's $13 billion a year mobile sector with its number three and four players Vodafone Australia and Hutchison "3" forced into merger... The new group, to be named VHA Pty Ltd, will have more than 6 million customers and sell products and services under the Vodafone brand. The deal also appears to signal the death knell of the 3 brand in Australia with Vodafone being earmarked as the new venture's main brand."

Uncertain times have forced Australia's third and fourth largest carriers, Vodafone and 3, into merger. The two operate in all major centres and select rural areas across the country, and currently carry many of HTC's and Samsung's Windows Mobile devices, including the Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, Omnia, i600, and i780. It's expected that once the merger is complete, all products and services will sell under the Vodafone brand, with pricing expected to change in an attempt to take aim at Australia's second largest carrier, Optus.
