Handmark Spins Off Astraware After Only Two Years of Togetherness

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone News" @ 02:47 PM

"Handmark, the world's leading developer and distributor of mobile applications and services, today announced it has spun off its mobile games studio, Astraware, as the company streamlines its business to focus on other strategic areas of mobile development and support. Astraware returns to the management of Howard Tomlinson and David Oakley, two of the original founders, and will remain a Handmark preferred partner. Handmark will continue to support Astraware on a variety of distribution and promotional opportunities."

Back in January 2008, Handmark acquired prolific mobile device games-maker Astraware. Now, a bit over two years later, Astraware is back to being an independent studio. The press release (which isn't posted online yet) doesn't say why the two are splitting up - two years isn't very long in the world of blending two companies together - but perhaps the acquisition was made in haste...

"From now until midnight on 31st March 2009, our award-winning Astraware Sudoku, Astraware Casino, Astraware Boardgames and Astraware Solitaire are all available for the very special price of just $4.95 each! That's a saving of $5 off the new regular price of $9.95."

Found this little gem from Astraware awaiting in my mailbox and thought I would share it with all of you. If you were looking for a fun inexpensive way to past the time when you are out and about then I suggest picking up one of these titles. I personally am a huge fan of Astraware Casino as the game was always a go to for killing time when I was stuck waiting for a client of sitting in a waiting room. To pick up your copy of these great games at the discounted price, please point your browser to the Astraware site at http://www.astraware.com

Astraware's Summer Sale: 25% Off 25

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC Events" @ 05:50 AM

http://www.astraware.com/promo/summer08/

"Summer's here and it's time for some fun! Whether you're on vacation, or just want something new to play, Astraware(R) has the solution - the Astraware Hot Summer Sale! Starting on 1st August, Astraware is offering 25 games each with at least 25% off the regular price. Several of the games are as low as $9.95 each! If you're looking for action games like Platypus or GTS World Racing, strategy titles like Westward or Tradewinds 2, word games like Bubble Babble, or favorite classics like Astraware Sudoku - they're all included with special prices for a limited time! The Hot Summer Sale only lasts until midnight on 17th August, so make sure you don't miss out."

Astraware's Summer Sale is now on. The blurb says it all - at least 25% off 25 games, and there are some hot (no pun intended) titles on offer like Bejeweled 2, Cubis, Zuma, and Chuzzle. Of course, if you're in the southern hemisphere, something about this sale just seems so wrong, but that's not going to stop you from pocketing a good deal now, will it? ;)

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Smartphone Software" @ 12:42 PM

http://www.astraware.com/all/bubble.../?link=1/spin/0

"Challenge your word power with this undersea bubble-bursting brain teaser! Link together letter bubbles to form words and impress Wordsworth Smartygills - your friendly fishy host! Bubble Babble includes a fun interactive tutorial to teach you how to play with the bubbles and make words from them. Score points for each word you make. Impress Wordsworth with more complex or unusual words and he'll reward you with shiny shells for your collection!"

Astraware has released Bubble Babble for the Windows Mobile platform. This undersea puzzle game puts you in the center of the ocean so you can spell out words with bubbles. Sounds silly when you say it out loud but I'm sure like all Astraware games this game will help you kill that dreaded downtime when you're out and about and need something to do. Normally this game would cost you a whopping $19.95 but from now until June 21st, 2008 you can pick this game up from our affiliate store(s) for a low $9.95. [SPT] [PPCT]

Win a Copy of Hexic or Mozaki for Windows Mobile

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC Events" @ 12:30 AM

That's right - another contest! Thanks to Astraware, we have two copies of Hexic (one for Standard, and one for Classic/Professional) and two copies of Mozaki (again, one for Standard, and one for Classic/Professional) to give away to you, lucky readers. Do these titles sound familiar? Yes, you've probably seen them on MSN Games and the Xbox 360 before. The Windows Mobile versions are just as brilliant. We published a review of Hexic just yesterday; in case you missed it, click.

Okay, so you want to win. Here's how you enter the contest:
  1. Being the colourful games that Hexic and Mozaki are, make a post in this thread stating your favourite colour. Be as creative or as plain as you like. Red, green, yellow, fuchsia, maroon, baby blue?
  2. Please also include your device type in the post: Windows Mobile Classic/Professional (Pocket PC) or Windows Mobile Standard (Smartphone).
Entries are limited to one per person, and you have until 11:59pm (GMT) on Monday, May 19, 2008 to get them in. Four winners will be randomly selected from the pool of entries and announced the following week. Good luck!

Update: The contest has closed. Thanks to all who entered. Winners will be announced in just a few hours!

Hexic for Windows Mobile Reviewed

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC Software" @ 05:00 AM

Product Category: Games
Manufacturer: Astraware
Where to Buy: MobiHand [Affiliate]
Price: $9.95
System Requirements: Windows Mobile Classic/Professional (Pocket PC) or Standard (Smartphone) device

Pros:
  • Addictive;
  • Multiple game modes;
  • Looks and feels just like the MSN Games and Xbox 360 versions.
Cons:
  • Lacks online leaderboards.

Summary:
Alexey Pajitnov knows how to turn any shape into an addictive puzzle game. Tetris, which needs no introduction, is a testament to that. So too is Hexic, which MSN Games and Xbox 360 gamers should be familiar with. For years, I searched high and low for a Windows Mobile version, but to no avail. Now, that search is over. Thanks to the combined efforts of Astraware and Carbonated Games, Hexic is available for all flavours of Windows Mobile, and it does not disappoint.

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Smartphone Talk" @ 02:00 AM

http://www.astraware.com

Happy Friday everyone! Not only is the weekend quickly approaching, but we have another awesome contest to help the day pass more swiftly. The good folks over at Astraware have given us 4 copies of Astraware Casino to give away to our readers. Two of the copies will go to our wonderful Smartphone users and the remaining two copies will go out to two lucky, and equally wonderful, Pocket PC users.

As some of you might remember, I reviewed a copy of Astraware Casino a couple of weeks ago and I have to say, this is one of the more enjoyable games I have played on my Windows Mobile device. To enter our Super Friday Contest, all you have to do is reply to this message and let us know which version you would like - Smartphone or Pocket PC. It wouldn't hurt to tell us how much you missed us while we were gone as well. Remember, flattery will get you everywhere! (I'm totally kidding by the way! Just let us know which version you would like to win!)

The winners for this contest will be announced on Wednesday, April 16th, 2008. As always, we will only accept one entry per user and all entries most be entered by 11:59PM PST on April 15th, 2008! Good luck!
