Microsoft Provides iOS to WP7 API

Posted by Adan Galvan in "Windows Phone News" @ 07:00 AM

Although the Windows Phone Marketplace recently hit 15,000 apps, it is still dwarfed by the Apple and Google offerings. The bottom line is that to continue to grow, Microsoft will need to attract some of the developers from rival platforms. In that vein, Microsoft has created a white paper and new API that helps developers quickly port their apps from the iPhone to Windows Phone. The API functions as a translation dictionary, so that developers can look up equivalent classes, methods and notification events in WP7. Although the API will initially be limited to those classes and methods that have a WP7 equivalent, Microsoft is seeking suggestions from developers on how the API could be extended at http://wp7mapping.uservoice.com. If you are an iPhone developer and looking for a quick and easy way to develop for Windows Phone please leave your comments on the new API below once you have a look.

Camera Limitations Hamper Windows Phone Development

Posted by Adan Galvan in "Windows Phone News" @ 05:00 AM

"Microsoft's tight design rules require all Windows Phone 7 devices to have a pretty nice camera on them; they must tout at least 5 megapixels and video capture to boot. Unfortunately, Redmond's new phone operating system has limitations that mean developers can't fully take advantage of the lenses."

Although the Windows Phone 7 development environment is often praised, the actual SDK seems to be lacking in some crucial areas. Although developers can use the camera to retrieve photos from the camera, advanced functionality such as streaming video is currently not implemented. This means that messaging apps like Fring would be unable to utilize the camera for video calls (if the current batch of phones had front-facing cameras). In addition, apps such as those that offer augmented reality overlays would be impossible to implement. Let’s hope Microsoft will quickly update the SDK with an API to allow this type of functionality.

"Sure, some of the latest Samsung Windows Mobile phones like the Omnia II aren't yet widely available but nevertheless, you might want to start to develop for or porting your existing application to it already. If so, Samsung has just released its Windows Mobile SDK 1.2 which offers APIs to use advanced features unique to Samsung phones."

Samsung has a few neat tricks in their phones that use private APIs that you normally wouldn't know about unless you take a look at their SDK. They've just updated it, so if you're developing for Samsung Windows Mobile devices, take a look.

Samsung SDK Now Available

Posted by Jon Westfall in "Pocket PC Developer" @ 06:30 PM

"Now, Samsung has released the first Windows Mobile-focused result, Samsung Windows Mobile SDK 1.0. It offers APIs to use advanced features unique to Samsung phones. You might already have experience using advanced capabilities featured in the Windows Mobile APIs, like GPS, Bluetooth or multimedia support. In addition to the Microsoft Windows Mobile APIs, you can use Samsung APIs to access phone features such as the accelerometer, notification LEDs and haptics feedback."

Arne Hess over at the::unwired reports that Samsung's Innovator project is now available to join. By doing so you'll be able to access not only Windows Mobile APIs but also Samsung's APIs for device specific stuff like haptic feedback!
