Worldwide Sales of Mobile Phones Topped One Billion Units in 2006

"Blockbuster mobile phone sales during the holiday season last year propelled shipments to over one billion for all of 2006, market researcher IDC said Thursday. Handset vendors shipped a record high 294.9 million mobile phones in the last three months of 2006, propelling the full year total to 1.02 billion, according to IDC."
Well, there's no surprise that the number of mobile phones are ever growing, but one billion new units in one year blows my mind. That overall figure trumps the prior year total of about 832 million mobile phones meaning there was an overall increase of over 20% within just a year. Developing countries are leading the charge which I completely understand since cellular infrastructure is much easier to establish than traditional landline infrastructures. Anyway... enjoy the increased radiation everyone! ;)
