PDAs in Space: Be On Time for Your Next Launch Meeting
Posted by Paul Martin in "NEWS" @ 06:30 AM
"A special application, known as the PDA Depressurisation Program (PDP) and conceived by the astronaut Thomas Reiter, has been developed by ESA to compute the 'egress time', – the time that is left before having to abandon the ISS in the event of depressurisation. This application, tested for usability by Reiter during his long duration mission – from July to December 2006 – is currently undergoing qualification by NASA and will become part of the standard set of software packages loaded on each astronaut PDA."
A count-down timer is always nice to have, especially if YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT! I had no idea NASA was using PDAs in space. I imagine they frown on being a beta tester! Seriously, I wonder if all of the applications are custom or if they use any of the third-party apps we know and love, like Pocket Earth or the perennial favorite, Moonlander [affiliate links]?
