HTC Sets Up New Subsidiary for 3G/3.5G Development

"Taiwan-based handset maker High Tech Computer (HTC) has set up a new subsidiary, BandRich Incorporated, to develop related 3G UMTS and 3.5G HSDPA /HSUPA (high-speed downlink packet access/high-speed uplink package access) technologies, applications and mobile devices, according to market sources. Wen Kuo, former director of the Personal Mobile Communications and Computing (PMCC) division of Compal Electronics, now serves as president of the new handset design company, the sources noted. BandRich, which was established in the second quarter of this year with a registered capital of NT$267 million (US$8.1 million), is expected to develop feature-rich 3G/3.5G handsets for HTC to differentiate the company's products from other OEM handset makers, the sources said."
Well, it's no surprise that HTC has a particular interest in 3G and beyond. The article goes on to say that BandRich could possibly assume the device manufacturing role, while HTC focuses its efforts on developing its own brand of devices and accessories (and the latter is already happening). I guess we'll see how it plays out in the coming years.
