ESRI ArcPad Software Chosen to Assist with 2010 Census Activities

"ESRI, the world leader in geographic information system (GIS) technology, announces that its ArcPad mobile GIS platform will be a component of the Field Data Collection Automation (FDCA) project for the 2010 U.S. Census... The FDCA program will support census field enumerators who will follow up and collect survey data from households that did not return their census forms. The field enumerator will be equipped with GPS-enabled mobile devices, which will include ESRI's ArcPad software."
If you're an IS professional who's constantly involved in technology decisions, then you understand the need to constantly prove out ROI (return on investment) in the forms of either new capabilities or improved process efficiencies (i.e. better / faster / cheaper). So while there's nothing revolutionary or bleeding-edge here, these kinds of press releases are always fascinating to me.
This particular case is a prime example of mobile devices coming together with GPS and wireless data connectivity to provide improved data-sharing collaboration, increased quality of information via real-time updates from the field, and new tracking capabilities. In short, it allows the field workers to do more in less time with greater confidence in the intelligence provided and the data collected. What's not to like?
