Free Java from IBM
Posted by Andy Sjostrom in "DEVELOPER" @ 03:00 PM
IBM has released a Java virtual machine that is part of IBM WebSphere Micro Development Edition. The MIDP 2.0 Java runs on Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC. Free to download but for commercial purposes there is a license fee involved. An installation guide can be found here.
I've seen a number of Java based Pocket PC applications and haven't been impressed with the user interface. Graphical controls get distorted and the Start-menu is often thrown to the bottom of the screen. However, from the little I've seen from IBM's new software I can say that it looks much better. Can this be the first Java implementation that actually works on the Windows Mobile platform?
