New Pocket PC? - Compal Palmax z720
Posted by Jonathon Watkins in "HARDWARE" @ 06:30 PM
"After producing its own low-end handheld - Palmax z710, Taiwanese company – Compal decided to continue this business. Today we'll talk about the second PDA of this company in this year - Palmax z720. Long time before Compal produced only ODM-models of PDAs (as well as laptops), for example, for Toshiba. Probably, Compal's production activity under own brand somehow confirms rumors that Toshiba leaves the PDA market."
Duncan from FirstLoox let us know about a possible new Pocket PC – the Palmax z720 by Compal. It will run WM2003SE, has a integrated GPS receiver (which explains the antenna) and has a 300Mhz Intel XScale PXA263, 128Mb RAM, 32Mb ROM, a QVGA screen, a SD/MMC Slot and a removable 1050mAh battery. Compal usually produce Pocket PCs for others and as the quote above mentions, it may have been designed originally for Toshiba to release. These continuing rumours about Toshiba exiting the PPC market are starting to get worrying. I do hope that they will keep at it and continue to make great devices. Dell and HP could use a solid competitor.
Mobile-review.com have an English translation of their review of the z720 with lots of details and screenshots. You can marvel at the 'pleasant silver plastic' and wonder if we will ever see it in stores over here. Bear in mind that Mobile-review were testing a prototype and not the final production hardware. The only current information about the z720 is on Russian sites and while they talk about a release date of a few months, it remains to be seen when/if the device will be released elsewhere/at all. Personally I would love to see more PPCs with built in GPS receivers! So, a new Pocket PC model, more Toshiba rumours and GPS. Thoughts?
