iPAQ Aids EMS With Critical Diagnoses

Among medical professionals, the "golden hour" for head trauma and the "three-hour window" for ischemic strokes are vital parameters for successful treatment. Diagnosis of these conditions before the patient arrives at the hospital improves the chances for survival in many cases, but the size of conventional computerized tomography equipment excludes its use outside the hospital environment. Under a grant from the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Active Signal Technologies, Linthicum, MD, and Mink Hollow Systems, Highland, MD, are developing a portable, noninvasive PDA-based instrument for EMS first responders to assess a patient’s neurological condition and provide early detection of traumatic brain injury (TBI), as well as diagnosis and differentiation of stroke subtype. The choice for a Pocket PC was made over a laptop because MedEvac and ambulance environmental constraints prevent bulky laptop use in transit and during prehospital treatment, where space and usability are at a premium.
