Four Lines of Code Goes Four Platforms

Posted by Andy Sjostrom in "DEVELOPER" @ 11:30 AM

I once promised to take a look at the cross platform development tools from AppForge. Here we go!

It is not difficult to get started with mobile application development with today’s development tools. In fact, there are very powerful yet simple to use tools that enable developers to quite easily develop cross platform applications (ie: applications that work on more than one platform and type of device) very quickly. In this article we will take a look at how to design and develop a simple application for all major device types including Windows Powered Pocket PCs, Palms, Nokia Series 60 and Sony Ericsson P800/P900. This tutorial is helpful both because application development is so much fun and because you would like to try your luck on the fast growing mobile applications market. It is just a matter of a few clicks on Handango.com to set your own developer profile and start selling your application to users – across the globe!

This article applies to:

• Microsoft Windows Mobile based Pocket PC – or
• Palm – or
• Nokia Series 60 – or
• Sony Ericsson P800/P900
• AppForge Crossfire
• Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003

My platform of choice is Windows Mobile Pocket PCs and Smartphones and my development environment of choice is Visual Studio .NET 2003 and .NET Compact Framework.

Summary
This article shows how to leverage the use of Visual Studio .NET 2003 skills to target both Windows Mobile platforms as well as other mobile device platforms. Sometimes, cross platform just is a requirement and it is great that I can still use Visual Studio .NET when that is the case!
