From a developer's perspective, I find a couple of interesting Smartphone news when summing up last week's Smartphone launch. One of the press releases that were issued on October the 22nd clearly has "developer" and "Enterprise" written all over it! Extended Systems is a leading provider of corporate mobile middleware. Once they have their Smartphone bits in place, I expect to see quite a few large Smartphone orders from companies already using Extended Systems XTND Connect Server.

"LONDON—(Oct. 22, 2002)—Extended Systems (Nasdaq: XTND), a leading provider of mobile information management solutions for the enterprise, announced today that its comprehensive suite of mobile solutions will support the Microsoft Windows Powered Smartphone. The announcement was made today at the global launch of the Windows Powered Smartphone in London. Support for the Smartphone further demonstrates Extended Systems' continued commitment and ability to support a wide range of handheld devices and device technologies, thereby minimizing device support issues and costs for IT managers.

The Microsoft Windows Powered Smartphone provides both voice and data communications on one powerful mobile device. Extended Systems' mobile solutions will provide a platform for mobile application development on the new devices, as well as server-based synchronization capabilities with Microsoft Exchange and other popular groupware applications. In addition, Extended Systems' robust management tools will enable IT to easily manage data access from Smartphone devices to the corporate network."
