Thomas Scheen, has created a little mini website with a number of mpeg video clips from Cebit, among which include a spot on the Decuma Latin Recognition program.
This program uses a SIP to give what looks to be advanced Latin (Roman) character recognition. I tend to approach onscreen input options tentatively. It’s a great idea, and some of the things transcriber can do if it decides it likes your handwriting are really rather amazing, but as a general rule such input methods aren't fast enough or accurate enough to keep me happy. Who knows about this one? We'll just have to wait and see.
"Decuma Latin is a powerful handwriting recognition software device for texts written with Latin characters. The software supports both single character and multi-character input of non-cursive text. Furthermore, it has the unique ability of allowing the user to easily add his personal characters and symbols. It is based on an equally unique and patented method for matching curves, inspired by computer vision and image analysis."
"Decuma Latin is compact, fast and has low memory and processor power requirements. This makes it suitable for PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants), mobile phones, PC tablets, digital pens, etc. It is written in ANSI C and can easily be ported to different platforms. A novel approach permits the software to extract features from characters that do not depend on properties such as size, orientation or slant. The result is a flexible product with superior recognition accuracy. It does not require the user to adjust to a certain style or learn a special alphabet."
"Decuma Latin supports both single character and multi-character (word-by-word) input of non-cursive text (disconnected characters). Multi-character recognition, used for example on an MS pocket PC platform, requires a segmentation module that segments naturally handwritten text."
